Weather in the Cévennes, a key factor when planning your cycling holidays

Perhaps the most frequently asked question: “What’s the weather like in the Cévennes?”
But also the most difficult to answer, after all, nothing as unpredictable as the weather. Anyway, let’s give it a try.

The Cévennes are a beautiful nature reserve in the south of France and, with more than 2400 hours of sunshine per year, they belong to one of the sunniest regions of France: Languedoc-Rousillon. The cities of Nîmes and Montpellier are even in the top 10 of the sunniest cities.

Weather in the Cevennes:  we are blessed with a continental climate with Mediterranean influences

The Cévennes benefit from a continental climate with Mediterranean influences. The sun shines abundantly and the winters are not very cold either. As there are about 300 days of sunshine a year, the weather is unlikely to be foggy.

Luckily, the Mistral is less powerful here than on the eastern bank of the Rhone.
An old French proverb calls the Mistral wind one of the three plagues of Provence and the painter Vincent van Gogh regularly complains in his letters about the Mistral wind blowing on his easel.

The Cévennes are particularly famous for their mountains and deeply eroded valleys with small rivers. On either side of the river, the landscape rises rapidly and there are beautiful forests and nature reserves. Ideal for walking and cycling.

Wonderful seasons in the Cévennes, ideal for nature lovers

Influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, we have short, cold winters and warm summers. The Causses (high plains) in the mountains are an exception to the rule. These uncultivated areas cool down and warm up faster, resulting in a sort of mini continental climate.
Spring is a very pleasant season; then nature in the Cévennes unfolds in all its splendour; hiking is a feast among all the flowers and butterflies.
In summer, the sun can be felt and the temperature rises considerably. Fortunately, the swimming pool or rivers in the region offer refreshment.

Winters are generally mild. It can freeze a few degrees at night, but chances are you will find a nice winter sun during the day. Snow rarely falls, but if you go a little higher up in the Cévennes ( e.g. Mont Lozère), there may be snow and you will find some (modest) winter sports facilities. With a bit of luck, you can have lunch outside in the mild winter sun, and after sunset enjoy indoors near the wood-burning stove.

The mushroom connoisseur can indulge in autumn; chanterelles and porcini mushrooms abound in the surrounding woods (and even on the domaine). You can walk for hours in silence on the Mont Lozère, coloured purple in autumn by the flowering heather.

Always something to do or see

We benefit from a Mediterranean climate pleasant and stable. Sometimes a cloud crawls in front of the sun or it can get so hot that we prefer to avoid the sun for a while.
Fortunately, there are many opportunities to do beautiful things in the area. The best excursions and activities for all types of weather are listed for you in our Info Guide.
